Finally got my hands on Numero’s Light: On The South Side 2LP/hardcover photobook boxset during my first trip to Amoeba in Hollywood. Capturing 1975-1977 Chicago night clubs on the South side, photographer Michael Abramson split his time taking night-shots at clubs like Perv’s House, Pepper’s Hideout, The HIgh Chaparral, The Patio Lounge and The Showcase Lounge. These were clubs filled with black and white patrons, dancing to rugged Chicago blues, funk and soul.

I’ve always thought of music as the perfect time machine, but flipping through the pages of this book with the accompanying music is just too good. Check out the full release here.

Before Bad Brains, the Sex Pistols or even the Ramones, there was a band called Death. Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early ’70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death’s music— and band name—too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A Band Called Death chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell…the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

EWH’s vocalist and guitars, Mara TK is son of NZ blues guitarist legend Billy TK who has been touted as the Māori Jimi Hendrix and is one of the most respected and technically proficient guitarists in New Zealand today. Drummer Myele Manzanza is son of Congolese master percussionist Sam Manzanza who was one of the first African musicians to tour African music in New Zealand and keyboardist Taay Ninh’s mother is traditional Vietnamese vocalist Le Nuong.
